I saw her face on the cover of National Geographic magazine, in a photo taken by Steve McCurry.  When I saw her eyes, I knew I had to paint her.

Her eyes tell the story and her young face (12 years) shows the difficulty of her life thus far.  I kept her face beautiful, despite the hardship under which she lived.  In the background I placed her journey in the dry and rocky mountains of her native Afghanistan.
